Scope and Content:
The United Methodist Church Collection at Dillard is
organized into six record series: Church Agencies, United Women Methodist
Louisiana Conference, Central Jurisdiction, Photographs, Miscellaneous Material
and Serials. Although the
collection is comprehensive in scope, the bulk of the collection consists of the
following subjects: African American Methodists, women Methodists and the
Louisiana conference.

Chronology
1773
The first conference of Methodist preachers is held in Philadelphia
1784
The Methodist Episcopal Church is organized at the
Christmas Conference.
1789
The Methodist Book
Concern, the first church publishing house in
America, is organized.
1792
The first General Conference is held.
1800
The Church of the United Brethren in Christ is established.
1803
The Evangelical Association is organized.
1816
Richard Allen, an emancipated slave, organized the African Methodist
Episcopal Church after leaving
the Methodist Church because of
mis-treatment.
1821
The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is established.
1830
The Methodist Protestant Church is started.
1844
The Plan of Separation is drafted which allowed the
annual conferences
in slave holding states to separate from the Church.
These states were
now part of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
1865
The Mississippi Mission Conference is organized, which included
Black Methodist churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
1869
Louisiana Conference B organized.
1870
The Methodist Episcopal Church South decides to transfer all remaining
African American members to a new church called the Colored
Methodist Episcopal Church.
1939
The Methodist Episcopal Church, The Methodist Episcopal Church,
South and the Methodist Protestants merge in to one church names
the
The Methodist Church. Central
Jurisdiction is also started at this time.
1946
The Evangelical Association and the Church of the United Brethren in
Christ merge, forming the Evangelical United Brethren Church.
1968
The Methodist Church and the Evangelical
United Brethren Church merge to create
the United Methodist Church.
1971
Louisiana Conferences A and B are finally united.
